Torvaldo hatte im Dezember 1815 am Teatro Valle in Rom Premiere. Es ist eine Rarität, bis heute, sowohl auf der Bühne wie bezüglich vorhandener Einspielungen. Bis 2006 wurde die Oper nicht einmal beim Rossini Opernfestival angesetzt: viele ungerechte Vorurteile müssen aus dem Weg geräumt werden, diese Oper betreffend. So wird oft behauptet, die Orchestrierung sei ärmlich, obwohl das Gegenteil der Fall ist. Dann wird an der Dramaturgie des Librettos gemäkelt, obwohl es sich um eine sehr originelle und lebendige Ausarbeitung des Stoffes handelt, wenn man es mit anderen Produktionen dieser Zeit vergleicht, und die Figuren sind ausnahmslos fein konturiert.
