Die Zusammenführung der beiden Quartette von Ravel und Fauré auf einer Schallplatte ist kein reiner Zufall. Diese Werke sind eng miteinander verbunden, ebenso wie ihre Schöpfer, die sich gegenseitig eine "unerschöpfliche Zuneigung" gelobt haben.

In seinem Werk ließ sich Ravel eindeutig von der vollen Essenz des Fauré'schen Gefühls inspirieren, dennoch befreite er sich schnell, indem er sein eigenes Idiom übernahm. Im einleitenden Allegro moderato, in Sonatenform, ist man in die intime, zarte, süße Ravel-Atmosphäre vertieft. Alles ist Zartheit und stilistische Affektiertheit, besonders in den beiden einfachen Takten des Très doux-Themas, das aus einer Reihe aufsteigender Achtelnoten und Viertelnoten besteht, die im fünften Takt explodieren: ein Thema mit Variationen, das dann wieder in ein tiefes, tiefes Register sinkt.

Gabriel Faurés Streichquartett in e-moll, op 121 ist ein Schwanengesang, eine Apotheose für diesen alten Mann von achtzig Jahren, der am 12. Mai 1845 in Pamiers in der Ariége geboren wurde.

"Ich habe ein Quartett für Streicher gegründet, ohne Klavier. Dies ist eine Gattung, die durch Beethoven besonders berühmt wurde, so dass jeder, der nicht Beethoven ist, davor Angst hat", schrieb Fauré am 9. September 1923 an seine Frau. Wie könnte man die Bescheidenheit eines etablierten Komponisten gegenüber einer edlen Gattung besser beurteilen...? Fauré, der sich bereits am Ende seines Lebens befand, bewertete dieses uneingestandene musikalische Testament: "Als ich mich dem Ende näherte, erhöhte ich meine Arbeitsstunden, und ich bezahle sie mit ein wenig Müdigkeit. Ich schaffe es kaum noch, ein paar Zeilen zu schreiben". Man bräuchte viele Seiten, um die aufregende Entstehungsgeschichte dieses Werkes zu beschreiben, so viel hat Fauré von sich aus in dieses Werk gesteckt.

Bringing together on one disc the two quartets of Ravel and Fauré is not the result of pure chance. These works are closely linked, as were their creators, who vowed each other an 'unfailing affection'.

In his work, Ravel was clearly inspired by the full essence of Fauréan feeling, yet he quickly freed himself by adopting his own idiom. In the opening Allegro moderato, in sonata form, one is absorbed in the intimate, delicate, sweet Ravelian atmosphere. All is delicateness and stylistic affectation, particularly in the two simple bars of the Très doux theme made up of a series of ascending quavers and crotchets which explode in the fifth bar: a theme with variations, which then returns to sink into a profoundly low register.

Gabriel Fauré's String Quartet in E minor, Op 121 is a swan song, an apotheosis for this old man of eighty years, born on 12th May, 1845 at Pamiers in the Ariége.

'I've started a quartet for strings, without piano. This is a genre made particularly famous by Beethoven, so that anyone who is not Beethoven is scared stiff of it!' wrote Fauré to his wife on 9th September, 1923. What better way to judge the modesty of an established composer faced with a noble genre…? Already coming to the end of his life, Fauré assessed this unacknowledged musical testament: 'As I moved on towards the conclusion, I increased my hours of work and I'm paying for it with a little tiredness. I can scarcely manage to write a few lines'. One would need many pages to give an account of the exciting genesis of this work, so much did Fauré put into it the best of himself..
