Günter Wand, der für seine Interpretationen von Bruckners Symphonien bekannt ist, hatte eine große Affinität zu Bruckners Fünfter Symphonie, wie der Komponist Bernd Alois Zimmermann bemerkte.
Seine erste Aufnahme des Werks wurde ein großer Erfolg und gewann 1978 den Deutschen Schallplattenpreis. Wands Londoner Konzerte mit dem BBC Symphony Orchestra als Erster Gastdirigent erlangten in seinen späteren Jahren Legendenstatus und brachten ihm die Anerkennung ein, die er so sehr verdient hatte.
