Die Hollywood Suite wurde ursprünglich als Ballett für das Produktionsteam von Fanchon und Marco geschaffen und konzipiert. Die Uraufführung fand am 15. August 1935 in der Hollywood Bowl statt. Für diese Aufführung wurde das folgende Szenario vorgesehen: "Das Ballett "Hollywood" ist eine Synthese dessen, was dieser berühmte Name für die ganze Welt symbolisiert, nämlich die glamouröse, aber künstliche Atmosphäre des Kinofilms. 1938 überarbeitete Grofé das Ballett zu der hier aufgenommenen sechsteiligen Suite.
1949 fand die Hundertjahrfeier des Staates Kalifornien statt, und es wurde eine gemeinnützige Organisation, The Death Valley '49ers, gegründet. Die Organisation erkannte, dass Grofé ein Komponist war, der das weite Feld der amerikanischen Landschaften am eindringlichsten erfasste, und beauftragte ihn mit der Komposition einer Suite zum Gedenken an den 100. Jahrestag der Entdeckung dieser unwirtlichen und schönen Wildnis. Ein außergewöhnlicher Festzug, der den Geist der kalifornischen Pioniere verherrlichte, fand am 3. Dezember 1949 im Desolation Canyon statt. Mit einer einzigartigen Parade von Planwagen und dem Hollywood Bowl Orchestra unter der Leitung von Ferde Grofé wurden die Ereignisse des Jahres 1849 nachgestellt. Mehr als 65.000 Zuschauer, die diesem Festzug beiwohnten, hörten an diesem Tag die Uraufführung von Grofés Death Valley Suite.
Der Dirigent Andre Kostelanetz hatte schon seit einiger Zeit die Idee einer Suite, die auf den Legenden des Hudson River basiert. Im Herbst 1954 lernte er Grofé kennen. Als das Thema eines auf dem Hudson River basierenden Werkes diskutiert wurde, griff Grofé es sofort auf. Bereits 1932 hatte Grofé ein Tongedicht mit dem Titel Rip Van Winkle konzipiert. Nun hatte er die Gelegenheit, eine erweiterte Suite zu schaffen. Grofé arbeitete etwa fünf Monate lang und beendete die Suite am 21. Mai 1955 in Santa Monica, gerade rechtzeitig, um mit den Proben für die Uraufführung am 25. Juni durch das National Symphony Orchestra unter der Leitung von Kostelanetz zu beginnen.

The Hollywood Suite was initially created and conceived as a ballet for the production team of Fanchon and Marco. The première took place at the Hollywood Bowl on 15th August, 1935. For that performance the following scenario was provided: "The ballet "Hollywood" is a synthesis of what this famed name symbolizes for the whole world, the glamorous but artificial atmosphere of motion pictures. In 1938, Grofé recast the ballet into the six-part suite recorded here.
In 1949 California’s State Centennial Celebration took place and a non-profit organization, The Death Valley ‘49ers was formed. The organization, realising that Grofé was a composer who most vividly grasped the broad scope of the American scene, commissioned him to compose a suite commemorating the centenary of the discovery of this bleak and beautiful wilderness. An extraordinary pageant glorifying the spirit of the California pioneers was held on 3rd December, 1949, at Desolation Canyon. The pageant re-enacted the events of 1849 with an extraordinary procession of covered wagons and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra conducted by Ferde Grofé. Over 65, 000 spectators who attended this pageant heard that day the first performance of Grofé’s Death Valley Suite.
The conductor Andre Kostelanetz had had the idea of a suite based on the legends of the Hudson River for some time. In the fall of 1954 he met Grofé. When the subject of a work based on the Hudson River was discussed, Grofé seized upon it immediately. As early as 1932, Grofé had conceived a tone-poem called Rip Van Winkle. Now he had an opportunity of creating an expanded suite. Grofé worked for about five months and finished the suite in Santa Monica on 21st May 1955, just in time to begin rehearsals for the 25th June première by the National Symphony orchestra conducted by Kostelanetz.
