Diese CD ist zwei der bedeutendsten Komponisten dieser Zeit gewidmet, die uns eine bedeutende Sammlung von »Consorts« für 4- und 6-stimmige Gamben sowie einige sehr bewegende »Consort-Lieder« hinterlassen haben.
Beide waren am königlichen Hof beschäftigt. Ersteres von Elisabeth I., Letzteres von Jakobus I. Der Ältere bleibt den Grundprinzipien der Polyphonie treu, die er bei seinem Meister Thomas Tallis erworben hat, für den er die ergreifende Elegie Ye Sacred Muses schreibt. Der zweite Musiker hingegen, ein Bratschenvirtuose, führt sein Instrument in neue Bahnen und entwickelt seine Polyphonie durch mutige Experimente weiter.
