Das symphonische Bild Der Kreml wurde 1890 geschrieben und ist ganz in der nationalen Stimmung, wie sie von Glazunovs Mentor Rimskij-Korsakov geprägt wurde. Das Bild ist in der Tat durch und durch russisch in seinem thematischen Inhalt und offenbart das Herz Russlands in den großen Denkmälern des Kremls, seinen Palästen und Kathedralen, in einer Musik, die etwas von der Musik der Fünf und etwas von dem, was mit den russischen Balletten von Rimskij-Korsakows Schüler Strawinski kommen sollte, widerzuspiegeln scheint.
Eine weitere Rückkehr in eine ältere Welt findet sich in der Suite Aus dem Mittelalter, die 1902 geschrieben wurde. Das einleitende Präludium, das bereits in den ersten Takten bedrohlich ist, bewegt sich zu einem lyrischeren und romantischeren Abschnitt vorwärts, in dem junge Liebende zusammen liegen und das stürmische Meer vor der Burg nicht wahrnehmen. Im zweiten Satz, der Scherzo, platzt mit all seiner Kraft in den Totentanz eines Straßenschauspielers, eine erneute Demonstration von Glazunovs Meisterschaft in der instrumentalen Farbgebung. Dies führt ohne spürbare Unterbrechung zum dritten Satz, der Serenade des Troubadours, mit seiner Harfenbegleitung und der sanft ausgedehnten Melodie, die allmählich im Nichts verklingt. Die Suite endet mit The Crusaders. Eine Fanfare leitet eine Musik mit martialischem Charakter ein, auch wenn es wieder Momente lyrischen Kontrastes gibt, mit einem meditativen Element, das durch die Natur des Themas angedeutet wird und in einem Triumphgesang endet.

The symphonic picture The Kremlin was written in 1890 and is fully in the nationalist mood, as characterized by Glazunov's mentor Rimsky-Korsakov. The picture is, in fact, thoroughly Russian in its thematic content, revealing the heart of Russia in the great monuments of the Kremlin, its palaces and cathedrals, in music that seems to reflect something of the music of the Five and something of what was to come with the Russian ballets of Rimsky- Korsakov's pupil Stravinsky.
There is a further return to an older world in the suite Iz srednikh vekov (From the Middle Ages), written in 1902. The opening Prelude, ominous in its first bars, moves forward to something more lyrical and romantic in contour, as young lovers lie together, oblivious of the stormy sea outside the castle. The second movement Scherzo bursts in, with all its vigour, a street-actor's Dance of Death, a demonstration again of Glazunov's mastery of instrumental colour. This leads, without a perceptible break, to the third movement, Troubadour's Serenade, with its harp accompaniment and gently extended melody that gradually dies away to nothing. The suite ends with The Crusaders. A fanfare introduces music of martial character, although there are again moments of lyrical contrast, with a meditative element suggested by the nature of the subject, ending in a hymn of triumph.
