Biografie
Langston Hughes (1902-1967), US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller der Harlem Renaissance. Schon an der Schule begann Hughes Gedichte zu schreiben. 1932/33 hielt er sich in der Sowjetunion auf, während des Spanischen Bürgerkrieges war er als Berichterstatter tätig. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg arbeitete er unter anderem mit Kurt Weill am Broadway und schuf mit Street Scene eine der ersten afro-amerikanischen Opern. In den 1950er Jahren, während des Kalten Kriegs wurde Hughes eines der Opfer der anti-kommunistischen Verfolgungen des Senators Joseph McCarthy. Hughes' Lyrik ist bekannt für ihre Missachtung klassischer Formen, den häufigen Gebrauch von Jazz- und afroamerikanischen Folkrhythmen sowie zornigem Protest gegen soziale Ungerechtigkeiten. Sein lyrisches Werk, das ihn zu einem der bedeutendsten afroamerikanischen Dichter machte, umfasst die Sammlungen The Weary Blues (1926), Fine Clothes to the Jew (1927), The Dream Keeper (1932), Shakespeare in Harlem (1942), Fields of Wonder (1947) und Ask your Mama (1961).
