Andreas Gursky, Gebunden

Klappentext

Accompanying a comprehensive retrospective of Andreas Gursky's work, this exhibition catalog traces four decades of monumental photographs that examine scale, structure, and collective life.

**Andreas Gursky is among the most influential artists working today.**His vast, often digitally constructed images turn architecture, commerce, crowds, and landscapes into precise studies of contemporary experience, poised between documentary observation and abstraction.

Reflecting the precision and impact of Gursky's photographs, this exhibition catalog begins with examples from the eighties, when he developed his restrained, objective approach under the tutelage of Bernd and Hilla Becher. It then follows his shift toward large-format color compositions, which brought photography into direct dialogue with painting in museums and galleries during the nineties. Across views of industrial facilities, apartment blocks, stock exchanges, supermarket aisles, music festivals, and nature, Gursky examines the systems that organize human behavior and reduce individuals to minute presences within crowds or imposing environments.

Recent pieces revisit and recontextualize earlier material, demonstrating how his practice has adapted to changing technologies and expanding possibilities. The author examines Gursky's elimination of conventional vanishing points, the compression of spatial depth, and his pioneering use of digital manipulation to merge separate viewpoints and reshape observed reality. Throughout, dichotomies between the microcosm and macrocosm, nature and technology, evidence and invention, reveal how Gursky has forged a visual language for an interconnected world.
