Am Freitag, dem 3. September 1939, nach einer Kriegserklärung an Deutschland, heulten in London die Luftangriffssirenen. Noch in der Nacht zuvor brachte Victor Sylvester mit seinem Ballhausorchester im Radio das ganze Land zum Schmelzen. Der Krieg würde sich als erster Konflikt erweisen, bei dem die Musik über das Radio eine große Rolle spielen würde. Zunächst brachte es Hoffnung, wo wenig existierte.
