»Y« wurde ursprünglich am 20. April 1979 veröffentlicht und zeigt die Band auf einem frühen Höhepunkt ihres Schaffens. Die visionären Texte von Mark Stewart, die zuckenden Rhythmen und die Instrumentierung von Gareth Sager (Gitarre, Saxophon, Klarinette, Klavier, Orgel), Bruce Smith (Schlagzeug, Perkussion), John Waddington (Gitarre, Bass) und Simon Underwood (Bass) und nicht zuletzt die unkonventionelle Produktion von Dennis Bovell machten »Y« schnell zu jenem epochalen Werk, das es bis heute geblieben ist.
