Die elf Songs auf »Modern Nature« sind eine kreative Auseinandersetzung mit dem Tod des Gründungsmitglieds und Drummers Jon Brookes, der im Sommer 2013 verstarb. Laut Sänger Tim Burgess drücken die neuen Songs die Sehnsucht der Band nach Glück und Wärme aus.
An dem Album waren prominente Musikerkollegen von Bands wie The Verve, New Order, Factory Floor und Dexy's beteiligt, sowie zwei Backgroundsängerinnen von Kate Bush.
Produziert wurde »Modern Nature« von den Charlatans und Jim Spencer, abgemischt von Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Portishead). Das britische Q Magazin bezeichnet das neue Album als »eines der feinsten ihrer gesamten Karriere«.
