Nach Erfahrungen in verschiedenen kleineren – und mehr oder weniger erfolglosen – Kombos und Einsätzen als Studiogitarrist bei Größen wie Aretha Franklin und Percy Sledge, brachten Gregg und Duane Allman 1969 mit ihrer neuen Band das Debüt-Album „The Allman Brothers Band“ heraus. Zwar hatten sie das Blues-Revival um einige Jahre verpasst, doch klangen sie wie keine andere Band ihrer Zeit. Um die musikalische Virtuosität und das perfekte Zusammenspiel der beiden Brüder konnten andere Musiker sie nur beneiden. Zu Recht galt Duane Allman als einer der weltbesten Rock- und Blues-Gitarristen.

Höhepunkte wie "Don't Want You No More", "It's Not My Cross to Bear", "Black Hearted Woman" und "Trouble No More" sind Gründe, warum dies eine der größten Band war, die je aus dem amerikanischen Süden kam."
