Auf insgesamt 4 CDs (101 Tracks) und begleitet von einem 16-seitigen Booklet werden unzählige ursprünglich auf 7"-Single erschienene Soul-Songs wieder erhältlich gemacht. Dass diese Singles Raritäten erster Güte sind, versteht sich von selbst!
Die Geschichte von Designer Records ist in jeder Hinsicht ungewöhnlich. Zum einen war das 1967 gegründete Label nicht in den üblichen Hochburgen des Souls beheimatet, zum anderen entwickelten die Inhaber Style Wooten und Roland Janes ein in jeder Hinsicht ungewöhnliches Geschäftsmodell. Künstler übernahmen die Standardkosten von $ 469, 50 für den Schnitt einer 7", im Gegenzug leistete das Label die Kosten für die Aufnahmen und den Vertrieb. So kamen auch Künstler zu ihrer Chance, die sonst keinen Plattenvertrag ergattern konnten. So sind viele der Aufnahmen nicht puristischer Soul, sondern die Genre-Grenzen werden mit Blues und Rockabilly aufgelöst. Viele der Aufnahmen sind entsprechend »wild«, zeugen vom Willen zum Experiment und arbeiten ausgiebig mit dem Reverb-Effekt.
Mehr als ein Zeitdokument, ist dieses Album eine aufregende Entdeckungsreise durch die Tiefen des Souls, die man auf der üblichen Reiseroute sonst nicht streift.
