Die Veröffentlichung des Ray-Charles-Albums »What'd I Say« im Jahr 1959 machte Charles' ersten Top-10-Hit »What I'd Say« populär und wurde zu seiner ersten Goldenen Schallplatte. Der Song wurde von dem amerikanischen Sänger, Songwriter, Pianisten und Komponisten während einer Live-Show im Jahr 1958 spontan geschrieben. Ray Charles trat eines Abends im Dezember 1958 auf, und als sie noch 15 Minuten auf der Uhr hatten, um aufzutreten, war ihr gesamter Katalog abgedeckt, und er musste sich eine schnelle Lösung einfallen lassen, um die Show zu retten und bezahlt zu werden. Da begann Charles zu improvisieren und spielte die allererste Kostprobe des inzwischen legendären »What'd I Say«. Auf dem Album What'd I Say sind auch »Rockhouse«, »Roll With My Baby« und »Tell All The World About You« enthalten.
