Picking from a vast array of his originals, Young chooses favorites from his playbook like a trip into his music history and performs them mostly alone, taking a solo acoustic journey to a new place. Each of the songs blend and create one continuous flow, clocking in at a 48-minute pure and intimate listening experience. Produced by Lou Adler and Neil Young and mixed by Young and Niko Bolas, aka The Volume Dealers, this is unlike any other album he has released to date. Young describes BEFORE AND AFTER succinctly: “The feeling is captured, not in pieces, but as a whole piece — designed to be listened to that way. This music presentation defies shuffling, digital organization, separation. Only for listening. That says it all”. New versions of the songs themselves seamlessly move and morph with mesmerizing clarity, beginning with his earliest Buffalo Springfield appearance, "Burned," to the recent "Don't Forget Love" (from 2021’s BARN) and including the previously unreleased song “If You Got Love”. Die Band, 1965 in San Francisco gegründet, war Zeitgenosse lokaler Bands wie Jefferson Airplane und den Grateful Dead und erlangte dank ihres fantasievollen Psychedelic Rocks, der Einflüsse aus Jazz, Klassik und Folk aufgriff, große Popularität in der San Francisco Bay Area. Ihre Live-Auftritte waren legendär, nicht zuletzt dank ihrer ausgedehnten Improvisationen und des Zusammenspiels der Gitarren von John Cipollina und Gary Duncan, die von David Freiberg (Bass) und Greg Elmore (Schlagzeug) hervorragend unterstützt wurden.

Ende der 1960er-Jahre beeinflusste ihr musikalischer Stil zahlreiche aufstrebende Künstler in den USA und Europa (darunter die britische Band Man, die große Bewunderer waren), insbesondere durch ihr 1968 erschienenes, selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum und das ein Jahr später veröffentlichte Album „Happy Trails“. 1969 erweiterte die Band ihre Besetzung mit Dino Valenti (Gitarre, Gesang) und dem renommierten britischen Keyboarder Nicky Hopkins.

Obwohl sie nicht so kommerziell erfolgreich waren wie ihre Kollegen von der Westküste, erreichten alle Alben der Band Chartplatzierungen in den USA. Diese Box enthält die Alben „Quicksilver Messenger Service“, „Happy Trails“, „Shady Grove“, „Just For Love“, „What About Me“, „Quicksilver“ und „Comin’ Thru“ sowie 15 Bonustracks aus Demos, seltenen Singles und einem Live-Mitschnitt von 1968.
