Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, LaVern Baker, Bob Dylan und unzählige andere haben seine Songs aufgenommen. Er hat einen unauslöschlichen Eindruck in der modernen amerikanischen Musik hinterlassen. Wie bei anderen Bluesmusikern seiner Generation ging auch bei Lonnie Johnson seine musikalische Aktivität in den 1950er Jahren zurück, sodass er nur noch als Koch oder Hausmeister arbeitete. »Blues & Ballads« ist eines der Alben, die sein Comeback markierten.
