Hexvessel wurde von dem englischen Singer/Songwriter Mat McNerney (Beastmilk, Grave Pleasures, Carpenter Brut usw.) gegründet, nachdem er 2009 nach Finnland gezogen war. Ihr Musikstil wird als „Forest Folk“ bezeichnet. Ihr Debütalbum 'Dawnbearer' wurde 2011 weltweit auf Svart Records veröffentlicht und gilt als einflussreicher Klassiker des modernen Occult Rock Revivals.
