In the summer of 1970, Diana Ross was riding high with her smash single, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” written and produced by Ashford & Simpson. With that success, Motown President Berry Gordy requested another album from the team. The result was the critically acclaimed Surrender.
Surrender contained some of Ross’ best work. The singles from the LP—“Remember Me,” “Reach Out I’ll Be There” and the title track—are now considered classics and fan favorites. Yet the album did not perform as well as was hoped. There was some market confusion at the time: Motown had released Everything Is Everything in between the two Ashford & Simpson LPs.
Overseas, however, was a different story. Diana Ross had streaked to No. 1 in the U. K. with “I’m Still Waiting,” an unexpected single from Everything Is Everything. It was so huge that Tamla Motown added it to Surrender, re-titling the album I’m Still Waiting, sending the LP into the U. K. Top 10.
Now, hot on the heels of Everything Is Everything: Expanded Edition, Hip-oSelect. com releases Surrender: Expanded Edition, containing the lovingly remastered original album and nine bonus tracks. Featured among the bonus material is “Baby I’ll Come,” the only unreleased song from the Surrender sessions, plus incredible alternate mixes and versions. Closing out this special set is the original vocal demo by songwriter / producer Valerie Simpson, who also sat for a brand-new interview with soul music scholar David Nathan exclusively for the liner notes.
Other highlights: a never-before-heard stereo mix of the alternate vocal of “Remember Me,” previously heard edited and shortened on the Diana! television special soundtrack. A magnificent alternate vocal of “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” A brand-new stereo single mix of “Surrender.”
For our friends in the U. K. we’ve included “I’m Still Waiting,” as this was the way many fans across the pond remember the album.
The CD booklet contains a new essay from Mr. Nathan, song-by-song commentary and trivia, and—WOW—several stunning, rare and previously unpublished photographs from the Harry Langdon sessions for the original LP jacket. It’s a perfect complement to the beautiful music. We proudly surrender this special edition to all of you, remembering what a good thing it was, and still is.
