Die neueste Folge der hochgelobten 3-CD-Reihe von Grapefruit, die in vier Stunden ein bestimmtes Kalenderjahr der britischen Popgeschichte zelebriert.
1965 wurde die Beat-/R&B-Revolution der beiden vorangegangenen Jahre in neue, ehrgeizigere Formen gekleidet, als der britische Pop ein erschütterndes Crescendo des Klangs erreichte, wobei Rückkopplungen, Fuzzboxen und (in Graham Bonds Fall) das Mellotron den Klangmix bereicherten.
Das Jahr war eine schwindelerregende Melange aus zähflüssigem Pretty Things / Kinks / Small Faces-Garagenband-Getöse, blauäugigem Club-Soul (mit freundlicher Genehmigung von Mod-Gruppen wie The Action), von den Searchers abgeleitetem Jingle-Jangle-Folk-Rock und Moll-Akkord-Introspektion im Stil der Zombies / Poets. Während "A Slight Disturbance In My Mind" die proto-psychedelischen Klänge des Jahres 1966 untersuchte, kehrt Grapefruit nun mit "Box Of Pin-Ups" ins Jahr 1965 zurück, benannt nach David Baileys epochaler Veröffentlichung, die die aufkommende Londoner Swinging-Szene beschreibt.
Mit 92 Tracks enthält "Box Of Pin-Ups" sowohl die Marktführer als auch die Helden und Nirgendwo-Männer des Jahres. Zu den etablierten Top-Ten-Acts wie Manfred Mann, The Hollies und The Yardbirds gesellen sich Kultnamen und so glorreiche Unbekannte wie Glenn Athens & The Trojans und die irische Band The Spectres, die beide zum ersten Mal legal auf CD erhältlich sind. Präsentiert in einer auffälligen Klappbox, die ein 48-seitiges Booklet mit seltenen Fakten und Fotos enthält, enthält "Box Of Pin-Ups" auch prägende Beiträge der jungen Hoffnungsträger Elton John, Jimmy Page, Rod Stewart und Marc Bolan, die alle später ihren Status als unbedeutende Akteure der Londoner Clubszene Mitte der 60er Jahre ablegen und selbst zu Pin-Ups werden sollten.
