Produziert von Bruce Fairbairn, wird Permanent Vacation oft als ihr wahres Comeback-Album angesehen. Es brachte mit "Rag Doll", "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)" und "Angel" drei große Hits hervor und verhalf Permanent Vacation zum größten Erfolg der Band seit einem Jahrzehnt.
Permanent Vacation hat sich in den USA über fünf Millionen Mal verkauft und war das erste Aerosmith-Album, das in Großbritannien mit Gold (100.000 Einheiten) ausgezeichnet wurde.
