Das Rembetiko entstand im frühen 19. Jahrhundert in den Subkulturen Griechenlands, in Athen, Thessaloniki und anderen Städten. Sie wurden bevölkert von den Griechen, die im Rahmen des "Bevölkerungsaustausches" mit der Türkei aus Izmir und Istanbul ausreisen mussten - und mangels Arbeit zum Teil in die Prostitution und den Rauschgifthandel glitten. Der "Blues Griechenlands" handelt von den Nöten des Alltags und der Aussichtslosigkeit, ihnen zu entrinnen. Dass Frauen zu den bekanntesten Sängern dieses Stils gehörten, ist wenig bekannt.
Die 4 CD-Box ist eine einmalige Zusammenstellung von nahezu 100 Tondokumenten, die bis ins Jahr 1908(!) zurück reichen.
