ROLLING STONE ALBUM GUIDE ****1/2 "Like few bands since the Beatles, R.E.M. has been able to keep growing artistically while somehow continuing to broaden its audience. And the uniformly excellent 'Out of Time', with its unorthodox instrumentation (the mandolin that carries the haunting choruses of "Losing My Religion), the horns and strings that frame the gentle "Endgame") and ever-widening sty- listic base (which even includes a nod to rap in "Radio Song"), suggests that R.E.M. is only just beginning to hit its stride."
