»The Coral Sea« ist die posthume Hommage an Patti Smiths engen Freund und Photographen Robert Mapplethorpe sowie der Titel ihres Buches, das 1997 erschien. Kevin Shields begleitet sie an Gitarre und Effekten und spannt einen eindrucksvollen Hintergrund zur gesprochenen Prosa. Als eine Art schreiendes Requiem beschreibt »The Coral Sea« die tödliche Krankheit von Mapplethorpe. Das Gedicht erzählt die Geschichte von M (Mapplethorpe), der auf einer letzten Reise das Kreuz des Südens sehen will.
