Geboren als Manfred Lubowitz am 20.10.1940 in Johannesburg / Südafrika, wanderte er 1961 nach England aus, um eine Karriere als Profimusiker starten zu können. Zwei Jahre später erhielt seine Band unter dem Namen "Manfred Mann" einen Vertrag bei EMI. 1971 gründete er "Manfred Mann's Earthband" und wandte sich der Rockmusik zu.
