Der amerikanische Jazzbassist Jaco Pastorius nahm mit seiner Band Weather Report zahlreiche erfolgreiche Alben auf und etablierte sich darüber hinaus als anerkannter Solomusiker, der mehrere Soloalben veröffentlichte. Pastorius wurde als einer der besten E-Bassisten aller Zeiten gelobt.
Er starb 1987 im Alter von 35 Jahren nach einem gewalttätigen Vorfall in einer Bar in Fort Lauderdale im US-Bundesstart Florida. Dieses selbstbetitelte Album war Pastorius Solo-Debüt und wurde ursprünglich 1976 veröffentlicht. Die Bass-Passagen sind herausragend und ein gutes Beispiel dafür, wie geschickt und talentiert Jaco war. Seine virtuosen Soli beeindrucken bis heute die Musiker-Gemeinde.
Dieses Debüt-Album lebt von der Vielseitigkeit und den verschiedenen Musikstilen, die er hier für seine Songs aufgriff. Jaco Pastorius war erst 24 Jahre alt, als er das Album aufnahm – dieser Fakt zeigt das besondere Talent des unter tragischen Umständen ums Leben gekommenen Musikers.
JACO PASTORIUS is widely acknowledged for his skills as an electric bass player. He died in 1987 at age 35 following a violent incident at a Fort Lauderdale drinking establishment.
This self-titled album was PASTORIUS' solo debut and was originally released in 1976. As living legend Pat Metheny puts it in the liner notes on one of the re-issues of Pastorius' albums:
"Jaco Pastorius may well have been the last jazz musician of the 20th century to have made a major impact on the musical world at large.
