1973 wollte Bob Dylan wieder ein Album mit The Band aufnehmen. Columbia erfüllte diesen Wunsch gerne und am 17. Januar 1974 wurde "Planet Waves" in den USA veröffentlicht. Nur eine Single ("On A Night Like This") gelangte in die Hitparaden - dennoch erreichte das Longplay die Spitzenposition der US-Charts und empfahl Dylan einmal mehr als einen sensiblen Songwriter, der auch kommerziell erfolgreich sein konnte.
