Für diejenigen, die eine Zusammenstellung von Aerosmith-Songs ohne ihren Anteil an Power-Balladen einfach nicht ertragen können, enttäuscht »Nine Lives« nicht. »Hole in My Soul«, ein eingängiges Stück in der unverschämt sentimentalen Tradition von »Dream On« und »Crazy«, sollte die Fans in den Arenen im ganzen Land mit Feuerzeugen winken lassen, ebenso wie »Full Circle« mit seinem hymnischen Refrain und dem bolerolastigen Arrangement. Seinen melodramatischen Höhepunkt erreicht das Album im letzten Stück »Fallen Angels«, einem mehr als achtminütigen Opus, das mit einem Wirbel aus heulenden Gitarren und klagenden Streichern endet.
