Alex ist ein typisches Teenager-Mädchen, das bei ihrer kranken Großmutter lebt. Als sie und ihre Freunde zusammen den Dachboden durchstöbern, finden sie eine Spielanleitung, die bei richtiger Anwendung den »Midnight Man« erweckt – ein böses Wesen, das jedermanns schlimmste Albträume wahr werden lässt. Anfangs halten sie das Spiel für einen harmlosen Spaß. Das ist es auch – so lange, bis der »Midnight Man« tatsächlich zum Vorschein kommt. Die letzte Hoffnung für die Teenager ist Dr. Goodberry, der sich eigentlich um Großmutter Anna kümmert, die dunkle Präsenz im Haus aber spüren kann. Und er weiß: Wenn der »Midnight Man« ein Spiel spielt, dann nur, um zu gewinnen...
