Auf nächtlicher Straße läuft plötzlich eine nur mit einem Nachthemd bekleidete attraktive junge Frau vor Roberts Auto. Sie heißt Elisabeth, sonst kann sich die völlig desorientierte Frau an nichts erinnern. Robert nimmt sie mit zu sich nach Hause. Nach einer Liebesnacht steht am nächsten Morgen ein mysteriöser Mann vor der Tür, der sich als Doktor Francis vorstellt und die junge Frau wieder dort hinbringen will, von wo aus sie geflohen ist: Ein »Schwarzer Turm« genanntes Hochhaus, in dem der Doktor mehrere Patienten behandelt, die wie Elisabeth am schleichenden Verfall ihres Gehirns leiden...
