Kommissar Alexander Forsman erholt sich von einem Bombenanschlag in einer Rehaklinik, als die Künstlerin Madeleine ermordet wird. Fingerabdrücke führen zum totgeglaubten Gentleman-Dieb Sylvester Markell.
Nach seiner Rückkehr in den Polizeidienst wird Alexander mit dem Fall des lebensgefährlich verletzten Bootshändlers Bruno konfrontiert. Verdächtig ist dessen Jugendfreundin Nikki, die zuvor makabere Mordwitze machte. Bruno stirbt im Krankenhaus - war es wirklich ein Unfall?
Ein weiterer Mordfall führt Alexander auf eine abgelegene Insel. Krimiautorin Birgitta Piik wird vergiftet, vier Schulfreundinnen stehen unter Verdacht. Unterdessen gerät Staatsanwältin Nora Linde in eine persönliche Krise.
