Das ist die Paraderolle für Superstar David Bowie: Als Major Jack Celliers gerät er in japanische Gefangenschaft und ist der Hassliebe des Kommandanten Yonoi scheinbar auf Gedeih und Verderb ausgeliefert. Yonoi will Celliers Tapferkeit und Selbstdisziplin brechen - Tugenden, die er selbst als Samurai am meisten bewundert. Der Kampf der beiden wird zur Schlacht der Weltanschauungen. Die Fronten verwischen, denn Celliers hat Yonoi in der Hand - und er nutzt seine Macht. Aber beim Versuch, das Leben eines Kameraden zu retten, geht er zu weit: Er macht Yonoi vor seinen eigenen Leuten lächerlich. Wie reagiert der auf eine solche Provokation?
David Bowie stars as a prisoner of war in this British drama. During World War Two, English soldier Jack Celliers (Bowie) arrives in a Japanese prisoner of war camp after an exhausting trial. Captain Yonnoi (Ryuichi Sakamato), the new camp commandant, becomes obsessed with breaking the new inmate's spirit, whilst interpreter Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence (Tom Conti) tries to mediate between them. As two different codes of honour clash, Yonnoi forces a confrontation with Celliers that brings them to the point of no return.
