Die französische Historiendramaserie »Marie Antoinette« zeigt das Leben der jungen Königin, die mit dem Satz »Sollen sie doch Kuchen essen, wenn sie kein Brot haben!« in Erinnerung geblieben ist. Die dem österreichischen Kaiserhaus entstammende Marie Antoinette heiratet im jungen Alter von 14 Jahren den Dauphin von Frankreich, der einige Jahre später als Ludwig XVI. der letzte König vor der Revolution sein wird. Marie versucht, in dieser Zeit ihren Platz am Hofe zu finden, und muss mit dem Druck, einen Thronfolger zu gebären, zurechtkommen. Gleichzeitig wird sie von ihrem Schwiegervater, König Ludwig XV. sexuell bedrängt.
