Der junge Student Josh Wheaton sieht sich bereits zu Beginn seines Studiums mit einer gewaltigen Herausforderung konfrontiert. Bei seiner ersten Unterrichtseinheit fordert der Philosophieprofessor Radisson seine Studenten dazu auf, „Gott ist tot“ auf ein Blatt Papier zu schreiben. Doch als gläubiger Christ verweigert Josh diese Aufgabe und wird daraufhin von Radisson aufgefordert, Beweise für die Existenz Gottes vorzubringen. Doch wie beweist man die Existenz von Gott? Um den Philosophiekurs dennoch erfolgreich zu absolvieren, stellt sich Josh dieser Herausforderung und versucht, mit Hilfe seines Glaubens, die These seines Professors „Gott ist tot“ zu widerlegen.
