Byron Gruman ist unterwegs auf einer Reise zu sich selbst. Von New Mexico nach Graceland, verfolgt vom Schmerz über den Verlust seiner Frau. Unterwegs nimmt er einen Anhalter mit, der behauptet, niemand Geringerer als Elvis Presley und auf dem Weg zurück nach Memphis zu sein. Anfangs versucht Byron, diesen verrückten Imitator so schnell wie möglich loszuwerden. Doch bald verfällt er dem Charme des »Kings«, genau wie alle anderen, die sie treffen, einschließlich einer verführerischen Marilyn-Monroe-Doppelgängerin.
