Der Dragonerleutnant Fritz Lobheimer will seine Affäre mit der verheiratenen Baronin Eggersdorf endlich zum Abschluss bringen. Dies erst recht, als er die junge angehende Sängerin Christine Weiring näher kennenlernt. Beide verlieben sich schon bald ineinander und Fritz will Christine einen Heiratsantrag machen. Doch da muss er erfahren, dass der Ehemann der Baronin von der Affäre weiß und ihn zu einem verhängnisvollen Duell fordert... Die opulente Ausstattung lässt das alte Wien zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wieder aufleben.
Hochkarätig besetzt mit dem damals neuen Traumpaar Romy Schneider und Alain Delon, stilvoll inszeniert von Pierre Gaspard-Huit. Gefühlvolle Verfilmung des Stückes »Liebelei« von Arthur Schnitzler, in dessen früherer Verfilmung bereits Romy Schneiders Mutter Magda Schneider dieselbe Rolle spielte.
