Abdullah Ibrahim ist einer der bekanntesten Musiker Südafrikas. Seine Musik wird oft als
Repräsentation der Freiheit bezeichnet. Seine wichtigste
Anti-Apartheid-Hymne "Mannenberg" (in den USA als "Capetown Fringe" veröffentlicht) gilt in
Südafrika als inoffizielle Nationalhymne. Er trat sogar bei Nelson Mandelas Amtseinführung auf, wo
Mandela ihn als "unseren Mozart" bezeichnete. Er hat mit allen gespielt, von Duke Ellington bis Max
Roach, John Coltrane bis Ornette Coleman, und ist der Vater des Underground-Rapper Jean Grae.
Dieses Studioalbum (aufgenommen mit seiner Band Ekaya in den RAK Studios in London) umfasst
Township-Jazz, Solo-Piano, Highlife und zahlreiche moderne Jazzstile. Am 15. April 2019 wurde
Abdullah in das NEA Jazz Masters-Stipendium aufgenommen, die höchste Auszeichnung, die die
United States Jazzmusikern verleihen.
