Oscar Peterson war der wohl brillanteste und auch erfolgreichste Pianist seiner Generation. Er veröffentlichte mehr als 200 Aufnahmen und erhielt neben unzähligen Auszeichnungen insgesamt acht Grammys. Duke Ellington bezeichnete seinen Kollegen einmal als den »Maharadscha der Tasten«. Ray Charles drückte es deftiger aus: »Oscar could play like a motherfucker!« Peterson selbst sagte: »Einige Musiker werden sehr philosophisch und kopflastig, wenn es um Jazz geht. Du brauchst überhaupt keine Prologe, du spielst einfach.«
