Am 11. Juli 1958, als er Standard Coltrane einspielte, bevorzugte John Coltrane vertraute und unbekannte Melodien aus seiner Jugend und suchte in ihnen neue Strukturen und Inspirationen. Das erst 1962 veröffentlichte Album entstand für Prestige Records mit Trompeter Wilbur Harden, Pianist Red Garland, Bassist Paul Chambers und Schlagzeuger Jimmy Cobb. Coltranes bahnbrechender modaler Post-Bob von Miles Davis' Kind of Blue lag noch in der Zukunft. Zu hören sind statt dessen u.a. eine zehnminütige Version des Standards Invitation.
