James Giuffre war ein amerikanischer Jazz-Klarinettist, Saxophonist, Komponist und Arrangeur,
der sich durch die Entwicklung von Jazzformen auszeichnete, die ein freies Zusammenspiel der
Musiker ermöglichten. Sein Album „Western Suite“ von 1960 enthält ein ungewöhnliches Trio aus
Klarinette, Gitarre und Ventilposaune. Die erste Hälfte des Albums ist Giuffre's Country Music /
Folk-inspirierter Suite gewidmet, während die zweite Hälfte eine lange und abstrakte Version des Big
Band-Standards "Topsy" und einen Thelonious Monk-Track enthält.

His 1960 album »Western Suite« features an unusual trio of clarinet, guitar and valve trombone. The first half of the album is devoted to Giuffre's country music / folk-inspired suite, while the second half features a lengthy and abstract version of the big band standard »Topsy« and a Thelonious Monk song.
