Seit Art Blakey 1955 die ersten Aufnahmen mit seinen Jazz Messengers gemacht hatte, war das Ensemble meist in der klassischen Hardbop-Quintett-Besetzung mit Trompete, Tenorsax, Klavier, Bass und Schlagzeug aufgetreten. Das änderte sich 1961, als Blakey den Posaunisten Curtis Fuller fest als sechsten Mann dazu holte und außerdem Lee Morgan und Bobby Timmons durch Freddie Hubbard und Cedar Walton ersetzte. “Mosaic” war das erste Album mit dieser kraftvollen neuen Formation, die sich bei dieser Gelegenheit mit fünf grandiosen Hard-Bop-Originalen von Hubbard, Walton, Fuller und Wayne Shorter vorstellte.
