True Blue ist sein drittes bei Venus veröffentlichtes Album. Nachdem er die unbeständige und turbulente Zeit des "Free Jazz" erlebt hat, ist Shepps Spiel hier relativ traditionell, aber einzigartig. Sein oft heiserer Ton ist sehr markant und klingt zerbrechlich und bullig zugleich. Seine langsamen, ruhigen Passagen können sich plötzlich in eine Explosion roher Emotionen verwandeln, und der Effekt ist ziemlich verblüffend.
Unterstützt von einem herausragenden Trio, bestehend aus John Hicks, George Mraz und Billy Drummond, hat der einzigartige Archie Shepp ein wunderbares Album mit Standard-Jazzstücken und einigen Kompositionen von John Coltrane vorgelegt. Mit einem französischen Lied, "Que Reste-t-il De Nos Amours", stellt er sogar seine charmante Gesangsstimme unter Beweis.
