Im Anschluss an "This Time" veröffentlichte Al Jarreau 1981 sein achtes Studioalbum "Breakin' Away". Es wurde bald zum Standardwerk des L.A.-Pop- und R&B-Sounds und bleibt bis heute sein bestes und populärstes Werk. Es hielt sich zwei Jahre lang in den Billboard 200 und wurde von der RIAA mit Platin ausgezeichnet. "Breakin' Away" wurde bei den Grammys 1982 für das Album des Jahres nominiert und gewann in der Kategorie Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Das Album wurde von Jay Graydon produziert und mit hochkarätigen Musikern wie Steve Lukather (Toto), David Foster und George Duke eingespielt. "Breakin' Away" enthält vier Titel, die zu individuellen Hits wurden: "We're In This Love Together", "Breakin' Away", "Teach Me Tonight" und "Roof Garden".
