Alt-Saxophonist Phil Woods hatte zwar zuvor bereits mit Jimmy Raney und seinem Trompeter Jon Eardley aufgenommen, insgesamt war »Woodlore« aber erst sein zweites Album als Leader. Auch wenn die Aufnahme bereits fast 70 Jahre alt ist, verliert sie doch nicht an Frische. Woods sprüht vor Energie und zeigt, dass er das Einmaleins des Bebops perfekt beherrscht.

Neben den Standards »Slow Boat to China«, »Be My Love« und »Woodlore« präsentiert das Quartet auch eigene Kompositionen. Am Klavier spielt John Williams, am Bass Teddy Kotick, am Schlagzeug Nick Stabulas.
