Mit seinen Filmmusiken räumte Michel Legrand während seiner Karriere zahllose Auszeichnungen ab. Vom Oscar über den Golden Globe Award bis zum Grammy erhielt er quasi alle Anerkennungen, die die Branche zu bieten hat.
Bereits zu Beginn seiner Laufbahn produziert er ein Album, für das er 1958 über 30 der besten Jazzer seiner Zeit anheuerte. Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Ben Webster, Phil Woods und so gut wie alle anderen Session-Musiker aus New York erklärten sich einverstanden, mit Legrand dessen eigenwilligen Arrangements von Standards wie »Django«, »Don' t Get Around Much Anymore« oder »Night In Tunisia« aufzunehmen. In drei verschiedenen Gruppen spielten sie in den Studios der Columbia mit Legrand Jazz ein absolut ungewöhnliches Album ein.

The enterprise, "Legrand Jazz," is more ingenious, has more dimensions, than is at first apparent. This set of performances achieves several things at once. Legrand was on a visit to the U. S.A. in May and June 1958, the writing was done in the first three weeks of June, and the sessions were recorded in New York over three days at the end if that month. This concentrated activity no doubt aided the creation of a body of music which is a single, indivisible whole: these 11 interpretations belong with each other, and nowhere else. Besides offering a personal view if jazz history up to the end of the 1950's, Legrand's recordings have themselves become an historical document, something now lying a generation back in the past which can tell us much about where jazz was then and suggest a perspective on some of what has happened since.
