Es ist die fünfte Filmmusik in nur einem Jahr – John Zorn ist mittlerweile einer der gefragtesten des Genres. Die Großenkelin des mexikanischen Präsidenten der 20er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts, Plutarco Elias Callas – eher eines Diktators – bat Zorn um die Musik zum Film. El General ist verglichen mit anderen Werken Zorns fast zu einem „easy-listening“ Album geworden – und ironischerweise dann doch nicht zum Einsatz gekommen: hinter dem Rücken Zorns wurde ein weiterer Komponist mit der Filmmusik betraut und dann auch berücksichtigt.
