Der aus Texas stammende Herb Ellis machte sich als Gitarrist des Oscar Peterson Trios ab Anfang der 50er Jahre einen Namen. Später folgten Engagements mit Ella Fitzgerald, Jimmy Dorsey u. a.
Diverse Auftritte im Rahmen von Norman Granzs Jazz At The Philharmonic Konzertreihe und zahlreiche Studiojobs als Sideman folgten.

Die hier vorliegende Aufnahme Ellis In Wonderland stammt von 1956 und markiert Ellis Debutalbum als Leader.
Ellis empfiehlt sich als hervorragender Gitarrist zwischen Bop und Swing.

Herb Ellis was still a relative newcomer when he made these recordings. But he was already attracting attention as a member of Oscar Peterson's trio, and before long he would be recognized as one of the foremost guitarists in jazz. His trademark style, a unique mix of the lyrical and the bluesy, is fully formed and on full display here. Supported by an all-star cast including Harry Sweets Edison, Jimmy Giuffre, and Peterson the young Ellis more than holds his own.
