Weniger als eine Woche nachdem Frank Sinatra von seiner ersten Tournee durch Australien zurückgekehrt war, ging er in die KHJ Studios des Capitol, um mit der Aufnahme eines seiner wertvollsten Alben zu beginnen: In the Wee Small Hours, ein Konzeptalbum, das am 28. Mai 1955 in die Billboard-Charts einstieg. Es stieg auf Platz 2 und blieb insgesamt 33 Wochen in den Charts. »In the Wee Small Hours« wurde 1984 in die Grammy Hall of Fame aufgenommen. Das Balladen-Album gilt als eines der jazz-lastigsten Werke Sinatras. Die Lieder sind größtenteils melancholisch und traurig; sie wirken wie eine Verarbeitung der kurz vorher gescheiterten Ehe Sinatras mit der Schauspielerin Ava Gardner.
