Billy Cobham is acclaimed as fusion’s greatest drummer. His explosive technique powered some of the genre’s most important early recordings — including groundbreaking recordings by Miles Davis and The Mahavishnu Orchestra — before he became an accomplished bandleader in his own right.

Power Play (1986), was Billy’s second album recorded for the acclaimed jazz label GRP Records, and was the follow-up to the hit album Warning.

Cobham’s work with Mahavishnu Orchestra, is incredible, but this CD is by far is considered his best work. Billy’s drumming on this CD is almost supernatural in style. The futuristic keyboarding is breathtaking in technique and sonically.

The magazine Wax Poetics (issue #46) contains an interview with Billy Cobham, which considers this era the beginning of him moving towards a more smooth jazz sound. This album is nothing at all of that sort-especially in this case. One thing that makes this very different from his previous album Warning, is that instrumentally it does acknowledge the period instrumentally more with heavier use of keyboards and synthesizers in the music.

The CD features performances by Dean Brown (Guitar, Synthesizer). His guitar work can be heard on over 100 albums including four Grammy Award winners. Baron Browne (Bass). He has toured and performed with Angela Bofill, Stanley Clarke, Kevin Eubanks, Lonnie Liston Smith, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny G, Jean-Luc Ponty, Turrentine, Gary Burton, Randy Brecker, Al Di Meola, and Andrea Bocelli. Sa Davis, (Percussion). Sa Davis has worked with such artists as Tom Scott, Grover Washington, Jr., Freddie Hubbard, and Lalah Hathaway. His work can be heard on more than 40 recordings. Gerry Etkins, (Keyboards) Gerry Etkins, was Kevin Eubanks Music Director, on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno for 14 years.
