Maurice Duruflé war ein außerordentlich selbstkritischer Komponist, dessen Œuvre trotz eines langen Lebens gerade einmal 14 Kompositionen umfasst. Sein berühmtestes Werk, das Requiem op. 9, entstand 1947. Wie das Requiem seines Landsmannes Fauré verzichtet es auf die dramatische Sequenz des Dies irae und betont eher die lyrischen und tröstlichen Seiten einer Totenmesse. Anders als Fauré hielt sich Duruflé bei der Komposition dabei enger an Themen und Motive der gregorianischen Totenmesse. Der Choir of King’s College Cambridge stellt das Werk hier zusammen mit dem Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment erstmals auf historischen Instrumenten vor.
