Zu Beginn der achtziger Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts schloss sich auf Anregung des Baron van Swieten ein Kreis von Wiener Aristokraten zusammen, in dem während der Fasten- und Weihnachtszeit Oratorien von Hasse, CPE Bach und vor allem Händel aufgeführt wurden. Seit 1787 wurden diese vorzugsweise von Mozart geleitet. Händels "Acis und Galatea", die "Cäcilien-Ode", das "Alexanderfest" und eben "Der Messias" wurden von Mozart eigens dafür neu eingerichtet. Damit passte er die Werke den damaligen Gegebenheiten an.
